Nordic Log Cabin

About us / Eco-Friendly / Timber Quality / Healthy Living
The Nordic Log Cabin Company was formed to help increase the awareness of, and fulfill the demand for, high quality log buildings. Our buildings suit a multitude of applications, from a small garden building, home office or granny annex through to a full sized house. The advantages of our construction materials and methods have long been understood in the Nordic countries, where almost all buildings use this most natural, healthy and ecologically friendly approach to construction. In the U.K. we are only just realising the possibilities, and compelling advantages, of log buildings. We import from well-established manufacturers in Finland and Sweden, who use only the highest quality Nordic Pine to produce buildings which are sold throughout the World.

Timber is a superb building material with outstanding environmental benefits. In Nordic countries there is a well-established Government policy that ensures more trees are planted than are cut down for our use. This legal requirement is strictly regulated and any area of harvested forest is replanted within two years. Trees are a truly natural resource, and forests act as the ‘lungs’ of the earth, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen.
The Nordic Pine used in the construction of our buildings is ideally suited to the task. The climate in the Arctic, and near Arctic, region provides long cold winters, with temperatures not rising above -30° for long periods. This causes trees to grow very slowly, with growth rings tightly packed together, making the timber dense and therefore highly durable. Our timber is felled in winter when the moisture content of the wood is very low. Poorer quality timber is grown quickly, in warm climates where the wood moisture ratio is high. Nordic Pine is well regarded for durability, structural strength, insulation properties, and timeless beauty.

This building still looks beautiful after 20 years !
The environment in a log building is regulated naturally. When the climate is damp, timber draws in moisture, storing up to 5 litres of water per square metre. When it is dry, moisture is released back into the home. Recent studies by German doctors reported significant health benefits to asthma sufferers, and people with allergies, when living in a log home. It is believed that wood purifies the air in ways which our forefathers may have appreciated, and yet modern scientists are only just beginning to understand.
